FAQ
There is no cost to the materials I present on this website or in the Working With The Voice podcast. The course I created is my attempt to help find relevant and credible information about this topic, and giving people a framework of skills to be able to converse consistently with the Holy Spirit. I am not looking to make money, receive donations, or gain sponsors.
You have probably already heard the voice of the Holy Spirit and when you remember the experience, you feel a sense of fleeting amazement. It could have been when you were told to do something and did it, and it produced a remarkable outcome, or you heard it, didn’t do it and wish you had. If you want to experience those messages more frequently and consistently, you can. No one is favored above another in this practice and if you will give it your time and attention through the Daily Practice, my experience is that you will experience hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit in a way that is practical and efficient.
The Holy Spirit is the part of the creator that works in the world today. The other two parts are God and Jesus. Just as we have different parts of ourselves that operate together such as our body, soul, and spirit, the Creator has parts that operate together. In another sense, we talk about water in its different forms of solid, liquid and steam. Fundamentally, we can be considered one person, and water can be considered to be one chemical compound. God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are each part of the creator with different functions. The Holy Spirit is the active part of God that interacts with the world through multiple methods. He is the part who directs, guides, and communicates with us, specifically through communication with our spirit. The Holy Spirit is considered to have always existed but fully entered the world after Jesus’s death. The Holy Spirit is internal to humans and accessible to everyone no matter where they are, where Jesus was only accessible to people who physically encountered Him. Jesus told His followers that it was good that He left the earth because then the Holy Spirit would come. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the same, however Jesus is never referred to as being in more than one place at at time. The Holy Spirit is present throughout the world and in every person.
The Holy Spirit has no gender but I hear the voice as distinctly masculine. Others hear the voice as feminine. Still others hear the voice as a variation of their own voice. I have no agenda for you to hear the voice one way or another nor could I ever influence the voice you hear. It is simpler for me to explain this concept and then choose one method of explanation rather than to confuse the listener or saddle myself with the responsibility to always write and speak using gender neutral pronouns.
The distinction of the specific part of the creator called the Holy Spirit is the focus of Working With The Voice. If you investigate the subject deeply, you will find many discussions of the Holy Spirit as if it is the same thing as God or Jesus. To go back to the example of water, if you only refer to the term “water”, although it is accurate, it presents a very different picture than if you use the term “ice” or “steam”. Many times articles and information about the Holy Spirit is fused with politics and issues of today’s culture. It is my experience that this fusion robs us of the application of knowledge of the pure nature of the true Holy Spirit. Material in Working With The Voice contains current and applicable information, but it primarily brings information from very old material. The first four books of the New Testament of the bible are relied upon joined with a commentary written by a minister from the 1600’s, Matthew Henry. Although it was written long ago, I have found this information to be clear, practical, and non-controversial. In addition, practices obtained from current studies in psychology, anthropology, neuroscience, and human performance are used to create the Daily Practice process. You won’t find much traditional Christian language in Working With The Voice. This is absolutely intentional. People like myself have had enough negative experiences with judgmental and punishment-minded people that when we hear the traditional terms, an internal hostility is triggered and the process of learning is greatly hampered. My experience is that most of the focus in religion today is on the wrong issues; specifically issues that divide people into teams of “us” and “them “.These divisions, although they help people find their tribes, are at best not practical or helpful and at worst promote hatred and violence. I am specifically avoiding topics such as guns, abortion, sexuality, Republicans, Democrats, and what happens to us after we die. The focus is on the concept that hearing the voice of the creator to individuals is the most helpful and foundational skill for humans to gain if they want to make a difference while they are on this planet.
The bible isn’t horrible or boring, it’s amazing. It has been misunderstood, misrepresented, and misused. On the surface, the bible is the written history of God’s interaction with humans. Beneath the surface, it is the method of delivery of information that is used by God to change us. Books are physical tools to gain information from other people and from history. Reading is one of the major methods of constructing an internal environment that supports us in life. The bible is different. It is a sacred text, written by humans and inspired by God, and sacred texts have an intrinsic ability beyond material written from only the human intellect. Reading sacred texts changes you in ways you cannot plan but must experience to understand. I hadn’t read the bible but thought I knew all about it. What I found when I finally did read the bible and then also studied the Matthew Henry Commentary was paradigm shifting for me. Many people who speak about the bible, either for or against it, haven’t really read it. They may not understand what they are talking about, or ultimately, they aren’t saying anything worthwhile or intelligent about its contents. It’s a brag book for them. You won’t find any of that in Working With The Voice. I have found many people who have read the bible, understand it, and have actionable and practical information to share. You can find many of their works on the “Resources” page of this website. The information from the bible is critical to understanding the Holy Spirit’s messages.
Honestly, there is nothing I can do to make you believe in God. Converting atheists is not an arena I will step into, even though I understand their views. If you have decided there is no God, this isn’t for you. If you are skeptical but curious, or at least willing to entertain the thought that there is a God, then I think you will find this worthwhile. All of us who believe in God are on a continuum from skeptics to true believers. Almost without exception, the believers I have spoken to have doubts and concerns. Working With The Voice takes those issues seriously and investigates them honestly. This is a process that addresses the subject with the understanding that people are prone to delusion. We are very easily fooled by our minds and it is reasonable to think that hearing the voice of the Creator is a figment of our imaginations. So atheists, I get it and don’t argue with your view because it isn’t productive for me. Agnostics and believers, Let’s talk (and listen!).
I certainly understand this question, and it’s one of the most fundamental messages I can offer you. I had hostility to speaking about Jesus even after the Holy Spirit revealed Himself to me. I felt loving towards God as the creator of this beautiful world, and was willing to talk about Him as a concept to anyone who wanted to discuss Him even though I had no biblical knowledge. But Jesus? I really didn’t want to hear about Him much less say His name to anyone. In fact, I could feel my lip curl a bit when I did. I asked the Holy Spirit if I could just talk to Him, and not discuss Jesus because it made me uncomfortable. He explained to me that I felt the way that I did because I didn’t understand and that when I did understand, my feelings would change. The Holy Spirit was kind and gentle in His instructions to me, and as I read the bible about Jesus with the help of the Matthew Henry Commentary, I found things I had never been exposed to before. The end result was full faith in Jesus and unspeakable love for what He did while He was here. In addition, I experienced a tremendous amount of anger. The anger was directed at religious people for being such bad messengers. Of course, I don’t mean that all religious people are bad messengers and bad examples, but the ones who are loud and have the most attention and air time sure are. Simply said, Jesus was God in human form and His life as described in the first four books of the bible is the pattern and example that we can follow directly to understand the things that happen for us today. It is absolutely necessary to study what He said and did as well as what happened to Him before we can understand that He truly brought a message from God and that message changed the world. In this, He was the Messiah. The Holy Spirit is the connection to the part of you that is the same as Jesus. If you believe that Jesus was a myth or just a person, it’s impossible to put the time and attention into this practice, without which you cannot have the optimal results.
The Daily Practice is a sequential and orderly process of practicing different concepts to find your purpose in life. The Daily Practice builds skills to gain knowledge and new abilities to evaluate the circumstances of your life. The focus is on training and developing these characteristics; stillness of mind and body, forgiveness of yourself and others, prayerfully asking for what you want, disciplined speaking and proper use of words, elimination of unhelpful practices, knowledge of scriptures, and gratitude. The person it creates is one who can speak and listen appropriately, can evaluate their own thinking and eliminate wrong concepts, can apologize when they have done something hurtful, understands their needs and can ask for them to be met, works in their own interest and can stop self-sabotage, and has the ability to be thankful for the experience of being a human who lives on earth. This is the type of person that can find peace and order in life and that God can use to make the changes He wants in the world. It is a process that you will never finish but will find to be the most rewarding of your entire life.
Go to the “Resources” page and into the section titled “Worksheets”. Download either the document called Beginning the Daily Practice or these individual documents: Daily Practice Form (you will need one for each day), Ask, Forgiveness, My Agreements, My Prayer, Scripture, and General Studies. In addition, you will find a document that explains the Daily Practice, and an example of My Agreements, and My Prayer that you can use until you formulate your own. Devote time each day, preferably in the morning, to thinking about and filling out the Daily Practice form. Keeping a record is of great importance. Either create an electronic file to maintain your work or print the documents and put them in a binder for you to be able to access wherever you are. There are many resources to help you learn and grow. Subscribe to the podcast and listen weekly for further information and specific help with this process.
I would like to tell you that this is something you can do in ten minutes a day, but it just isn’t true. I know the process well and I cannot even skim the surface of its implementation in less than 30 minutes. In addition, it is a practice that takes a very long time to become ingrained in your system as a changed way of being. I regularly spend three to four hours per day on the practice. I understand that is not what most people are looking for, nor can they imagine themselves being able to sustain that. However, as you move into the practice you will find that an hour spent on the practice saves you massive amounts of time throughout the day. Start there. Give it one hour per day every day. As your skills grow, so will your interest and abilities. It’s worth more than you can ever imagine and in time you will be much more willing to devote time and effort to this practice. When you put the practice into action, you will succeed and fail in hearing specific instructions about what you are doing and what is important to you. But you will get better at this until you are able to consistently tune in and gain the direct answers you are looking for. Through those successes and failures you will learn to evaluate the outcomes. Do the practice and this will work for you. It’s promised in the bible that those who seek will find.
There is gratitude for the Holy Spirit that I cannot express in human terms. To play my part and to repay the gift, all I can do is encourage you to find His voice and teach you what I have been taught. My thanks are to all the people who worked to help me in this project, specifically JoDee Herschend, Pauline Limper, Judy Healy, Tracy Biggs, and the person who made the voice practical, Gary Carpenter. You will hear more about each of them and many others in the podcast and blog posts.
